The GAFL unit has a varietal innovation mission for apricots, peaches and their root-stock for which private breeding is underdeveloped and it can be used to create a variety of plant species to be used for demonstrative purposes. This mission is fulfilled by the ‘Integrative Genetics and Innovation in Prunus’ team.

The creation of improved populations, lines or varieties intervenes when it is necessary to demonstrate the feasibility, or the implementation of a new breeding method, or the introduction of innovative characters. Thus, marker-assisted breeding schemes were conducted in the pepper, the tomato or the Prunus.

The innovation involves:

• With apricots, the colour of fruits, its organoleptic quality, spreading out the production calendar and resistance to pests;
• With peaches, the shape of the fruit, its quality and its resistance;
• With their root-stock, the adaptation to biotic and abiotic stresses.

Introduction of some of our best known varieties:

Root-stock GF 677 (1978) is a peach x almond cross, for almond and peach trees. It is planted worldwide. With a high vitality, it is suitable for calcareous soils, chlorotic, filtering and slow growth.

The ‘LAURANNE’ almond tree (1978) is the first self-fertile variety whose fruit set and ripening is fast, the production good and regular, with a relatively late flowering. © Lauranne Avijor cov (1994) is a result of the cross Ferragnes x Tuono.

The BERGEVAL^© Aviclo (2006) apricot is an earlier variety than the Bergeron and is full of promise for the varietal range that is cultivated in the Rhone-Alpes. It has a regular bearing; it is self-pollinating with a gustatory quality that matches demand. The variety was chosen by the INRA of Gotheron.

The ‘PLATIBELLE’ (2007) peach produces flat fruits with white flesh. It is vigorous with high productivity. This innovative product with its sweet flesh has excellent taste characteristics.
