Genetics of biocontrol agents: Does intraspecific hybridization matter? (RDLB Team)

An experimental investigation of the phenotypic consequences of intraspecific hybridization was realised on two biocontrol agents, the larval endoparasitoidPsyttalia lounsburyiand one species of egg parasitoid,Trichogramma chilonis. Taken as a whole, these experiments evidence a great variability of the hybrid’s phenotypes with regard to their parents, ranging from inbreeding depression* to heterosis**. Moreover, we evidenced that the genetic architecture of the investigated traits was complex including cyto-nuclear interactions or genotype-by-environment interactions. The extent to which such intraspecific variability can be actually exploited has to be further evaluated.

*inbreeding depression = the relative fitness reduction of offspring from inbred parents

**heterosis = relative fitness increase of offspring originated from outbred parents
