Abstract

Juvenile to adult developmental transition is an essential event in the lifespan of any organism, in which sexual and somatic maturation is achieved and reproductive capacity attained. The acquisition of a complete adult phenotype also requires important changes during this transition with regards to associated behaviors. The timing of this transition is shaped by the dynamic interplay between genes and the environment, which takes place throughout development, from the embrion till the juvenile age. In vertebrates, the onset of the juvenill to adult transition, puberty, is marked by an increase of steroid hormone production as a consequence of the activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis. Until now, due to the multifaceted nature of this developmental transition our understanding of the molecular and neurohormonal basis is incomplete. Thus, I use the fly model, which offers a sophisticated genetics toolbox, to unravel the instructive role of the brain on this multifacetic developmental transition. Indeed, we have recently found a conserved brain regulation of glands steroid hormones production between mammals and Drosophila timing this transition. Moreover, I propose to continuing using this fly model to unravel the instructive role of the brain on the transition by identifying the cues integrated by the brain, the complex brain circuitry communicating with the glands, and the coordinator mechanism between develop and behaviors.
